Why we picked it

Pets Best has long been a favorite of ours due to its value-for-money proposition. For almost all pets, Pets Best is right at the top when it comes to how well its priced competitively.

While it does offer cheaper plans that you can see when you click through to the Pets Best website, we display the ‘Elite” plan, which also includes vet exam fees and alternative therapies, such as acupuncture and hydrotherapy.

As a bonus, if you also have a CareCredit card, you can use this to pay your vet bill instead of paying with your savings, and Pets Best will reimburse this card directly.

Our methodology

In the last nine years we’ve provided over 8.8 million quotes, and helped insure over 760,000 pets. Below is the trusted process we follow to provide our industry-leading pet insurance information. The scoring system we use is standardized so as to create a fair comparison of each insurance provider, and for pet parents to be confident of making an informed decision based on millions of pieces of real data, rather than just the opinion of one person.

We analyze a wide range of metrics for our scoring system, starting with internet search data that is in the public domain. This helps us determine which pet insurance companies are the most researched by customers in terms of monthly search volumes. Additionally, we analyze a number of reviews by other reputable third-party sources, although we view these collectively against other metrics in our methodology rather than relying on a single source, because even differing reputable sources can contain conflicting advice.

We then look at the annual coverage, deductible and reimbursement choices available, ensuring there is a broad choice to suit all budgets. We also take into consideration the waiting periods before coverage starts for accidents and illness, and whether there are any extended waiting periods for issues such as cruciate ligament conditions.

We also examine the coverage itself, noting whether there are any extra coverages, such as dental illness, included in the plans, or whether there are any glaring exclusions that consumers need to be aware of, such as alternative/complementary therapies. We also take into account whether the insurer includes vet exam fees as standard, if there is a charge, or if this coverage is excluded. Other factors affecting our scoring also include whether the insurer offers an optional Wellness plan, and whether the insurer charges any enrollment fees and/or monthly installment fees (and if so, how much they charge).

Beyond the details in the plans we monitor factors that are critical to consumers, such as claims processes. Does the insurer offer an app to report claims or is it just on the website? Does the insurer offer faster claims payments into a bank account directly, or is it just a check reimbursement? How long do claims take in days or weeks? Is the insurer able to pay the vet directly, or is it just reimbursement to the pet parent once they’ve paid the vet bill? Are the customer service agents over the phone friendly and knowledgeable and are they based in the USA? How long does it take from the time of claim to the reimbursement being received, both what the insurer advertises themselves and what customers say? We overlay this with data gathered from popular review sites to see how insurers score in real-world scenarios, such as how easy they are to contact – are they open 5/6/7 days and available during the hours a customer is most likely to get in touch?

We are able to view and monitor prices for every insurer for every quote that is generated through our comparison site, and using this data we can analyze which insurers are competitive for specific breeds, ages and locations. We also then run thousands of sample quotations for multiple pet profiles across various breeds, ages and locations to compare how prices have fluctuated each year by insurer, and also to see how insurer pricing changes as the pet ages.

Each piece of data we collect is assigned a score, which is standardized across each insurer. Weights are given to each source of data we collect and then pooled into the category of data such as claims or pricing. Different source weights are used for each element within each category. Insurer renewal prices, for example, would carry a different weight to whether an optional Wellness plan is offered.

Once each review is complete and checked for accuracy, a total overall score is assigned, which is based on the nearest 0.50. An insurer, therefore, would receive a score of 5.0, so long as the total score within our review was at least 4.75. Similarly, an insurer would score a 4.0 if their total score within our review was 4.24.
