Who are Embrace?

Launched in 2006, Embrace provides pet insurance plans for dogs and cats with accident and illness, and accident-only, policies available. An optional Wellness Plan is also available for an additional fee, offering coverage for routine pet care.

Policyholders can submit a claim online — via the Embrace website or the app — and there are no restrictions on which veterinarian customers use for treatment, provided the vet is licensed.

There are discounts available for multi-pet policies, if you have more than one pet that you insure with Embrace. For each year that your pet is healthy, and you don’t make a claim, you’ll receive a $50 credit which can be used to put towards your deductible cost.

Additional pet insurance cover from Embrace

  • Complementary treatments and rehabilitation

Laser therapy and acupuncture are among the less-invasive treatments that are included in an Embrace pet insurance policy at no additional cost.
  • Emergency care

If your pet needs urgent medical attention, you’re covered for emergency care — including after hours visits.
  • Hospitalization and surgery

Coverage for surgery is part of your Embrace pet insurance plan, including overnight hospital stays, anesthesia and after care.
  • Specialist care

Some types of veterinary care need specialist treatment and consultation. We’re talking radiologists, oncologists, orthopedic specialists, physical therapy and more.
  • Diagnostic testing

Testing for a range of illnesses and conditions are covered — including X-rays, MRIs and biopsies.
  • Prescription drugs

The cost of any prescription medication – including antibiotics, steroids, eye and ear drops, and allergy drugs – is covered through an optional add-on.

Does Embrace cover curable pre-existing conditions?

Pet insurers won’t cover incurable pre-existing conditions. So, if your dog has been living with hip dysplasia before you took out a pet insurance policy, you won’t be able to claim for any treatment relating to that condition once insured.

Some insurers take a different view of curable conditions — and Embrace is one of them. Coverage may be provided for some curable pre-existing conditions if your pet has been free of symptoms for 12 months.

Curable

Insurers may have a different selection of curable pre-existing conditions, so be sure to check with Embrace about specifics before purchasing a policy. Generally, curable pre-existing conditions tend to be gastrointestinal issues, respiratory infections, bladder infections and ear infections.

Incurable

Embrace won’t cover a series of incurable pre-existing health conditions. These include cancer, diabetes, allergies, hyperthyroidism, lipomas and certain chronic conditions.

Does Embrace cover cancer?

Cancer is a major health concern for dog and cat owners — and for good reason. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, 1 in 4 pets will get cancer during their lifetime.

Embrace does provide coverage for the many different types of cancer, including Lymphoma, Lipoma, Osteosarcoma, Mast Cell Tumor, Melanoma and Hemangiosarcoma.

Treatment for cancer can be expensive. Pet insurance helps to cover costs including consultation fees, testing, surgery, radiation and chemotherapy treatment, rehabilitation and after care.

What about hereditary and genetic breed-specific conditions?

Certain dog and cat breeds have a higher risk of being affected by particular hereditary or genetic conditions, health issues puppies and kittens sadly inherit from parents. Common examples are elbow or hip dysplasia, patellar luxation and types of cancer.

Embrace pet insurance provides coverage for treatment on a range of genetic conditions, including diagnostic testing, surgery and rehabilitation.

Congenital conditions are also covered. These are health issues that a pet is born with — a hernia and hypothyroidism are prime examples — though the symptoms may be delayed until later in life. Embrace also covers congenital conditions, provided an insurance policy is taken out before symptoms are shown or a diagnosis has been confirmed.

Do Embrace plans include alternative therapies?

Yes! Through an optional Wellness plan, complementary therapies are available for non-invasive treatments — Embrace provides coverage for a range of services, including physiotherapy, acupuncture, hydrotherapy and chiropractic care. Therapeutic laser treatment is also covered.

Alternative therapies can help with many health-related issues that trouble your pet. Chiropractic care can ease stiffness and lameness; acupuncture can help with allergies and skin conditions; physiotherapy can manage issues with ligament, muscle and tendon injuries and post-surgery recovery.

Hydrotherapy, a form of water therapy, is used to help treat hip and elbow dysplasia and arthritis, among other conditions. Therapeutic laser treatment can improve quality of life for pets who have back pain, soft-tissue trauma, ear infections and a host of other conditions.

Alternative therapies are included in pet insurance policies at no additional cost.

24/7 pet telehealth

Embrace pet insurance customers can reach out for support at any time of day or night — and on any day of the year — thanks to the PawSupport 24/7 pet health line. PawSupport’s team of experts are available to answer queries on a host of pet health issues, including diet and nutrition, behavior and training, symptoms and chronic conditions, exercise and even emergencies.

This is a free service that comes with Embrace pet health. It can be accessed by live chat, video chat, or simple voice call. Embrace partnered with PawSupport in 2019.

Do Embrace plans cover vet exam fees?

Yes, exam fees are covered with the more comprehensive Embrace pet insurance plans, and are an option to include in your policy while choosing your coverage levels. Exam fees will vary depending on which veterinarian you use, and can be expensive.

The exam is the consultation part of any visit to the vet — when the vet inspects your pet to determine what might be affecting your dog and cat, and to reach a diagnosis. While some pet insurers may only cover the cost of any treatment that follows the examination, Embrace covers the exam fee for accidents and illnesses (providing the accidents and illness are covered by the policy).

Embrace coverage levels

Pet parents can select different coverage levels to personalize their insurance plan. This dictates the maximum amount you can claim in any year. The maximum annual coverage levels available for accident and illness policies are:

$5,000
$8,000
$10,000
$15,000
Unlimited

For accident-only pet insurance policies, the coverage limit is $5,000.

There’s also a choice of deductible, too — the amount you pay towards any claim. Deductibles are set at $100, $250, $500, $750 or $1,000.

Embrace waiting periods

Waiting periods are a feature of pet insurance. These are set when you take out a policy, and refer to the period when coverage is restricted — mainly to prevent customers from claiming for a pre-existing condition that they haven’t disclosed.

Customers will be informed of any waiting periods when they start a policy. Embrace’s waiting periods are 14 days from the start of the policy for any illnesses, but certain orthopedic conditions may have a waiting period as long as six months.

This varies state-by-state though, and can be reduced by following what Embrace terms the Orthopedic Exam and Waiver Process. This involves a vet examination of your pet to rule out any existing issues.

What doesn’t Embrace cover?

Embrace pet insurance doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions — it’s rare to find an insurer that does — or bilateral conditions. What’s that? Well, if your pet has previously torn the cruciate ligament in its left hind leg, for example, Embrace won’t provide coverage for the same issue in its right hind leg as the chances of that occurring are considered to be high.

The list of what else isn’t covered includes:

  • Breeding, whelping or pregnancy
  • Any injury or illness resulting from dog fighting, racing, neglect or cruelty
  • Any injury caused deliberately by an owner, or a member of the owner’s household
  • Tail docking, dew claw removal, ear cropping and any other purely cosmetic procedures
  • DNA testing or cloning
  • Avian flu

‘Fast direct deposit’

‘Our three year old Chesapeake Bay Retriever had a recent three day emergency hospital stay with several tests/procedures totaling over $7000. Submitting a claim based on invoice only took less than 10 minutes and Embrace handled the rest of (the) process of contacting primary and emergency veterinarian. Our claim was processed and funds deposited directly into (the) checking account in less than a week.’

‘Thoroughly recommended’

‘I have a very old dog who is needing (emergency) and routine care. Embrace never quibbles about the cost and reimburses me promptly. I know it is expensive as the pet gets older but I have peace of mind that I will be able to afford all pertinent treatment to keep my beloved pet alive with pain-free quality of life. Without this wonderful insurance I may have had to make different and painful decisions regarding her care. I thoroughly recommend Embrace for your pets.’

‘Reliable’

‘I have insurance for both of my pets and Embrace isn’t the first company I’ve used. Submitting a claim is easy, they pay what they should. My 2 year old cat is sick and no one ever expects to deal with that. Having reliable insurance has made the experience so much easier. Now I can worry about her, instead of the money.’
